Sheltie Dog Breed Picture & Information
Alternative Name
Sheltland Sheepdog, Shetland Collie
Origin
The Shelties came from the Shetland Islands off the coast
of Scotland. Probably consisted of Scandinavian herding dogs from the
same stock as the Norwegian Buhund or the Icelandic dog.
Physical Attributes
Males are about 13-15 inches (33-38cm) while the females are at 12-14
inches. Several coats of Shelties exist. there are 3 main colors- sable,
tricolor (tan, black and white ) and blue merle (grey, white, black, and
tan). The most common color is sable, though tricolor is also very common.
Health Information
Sheltie puppies suffer from eye diseases. Some are prone
to hypothyroidism.
Miscellaneous Information
- Sheltie diets should be monitored because they eat a lot and can become
obese very easily
- Their coat requires careful grooming at least twice per week to keep
it shiny and clean
- Sheltie dogs excel very well at competitions especially in obedience,
showmanship, tracking and herding.
- They have a doublecoat where the topcoat consists of long, straight,
coarse hair which helps in repelling water. The undercoat which is short
and very dense helps keep the dog warm. Their toenails also need to
be trimmed every couple of weeks
- The dogs are lively, easily trainable and eager to please their owners.
They are fearful of loud noises and cautious of new environments. Since
their herding instinct is very strong, they are usually very active
and love to chase things.
